Love this, Thomas! My husband and I live by this mentality of tracking, measuring, reflecting, iterating…
And after nearly 15 years of marriage, it’s really cool to look back on our notes and see how far we’ve come.
After years of tracking personal wealth and business success, I’m adding my personal health to the list by wearing an oura ring and monitoring quarterly health metrics (weight, bp, body measurements, etc..). I was particularly inspired by Peter Attia’s Outlive.
Boy did I need this. I am completely guilty of vague goals, keeping track of things "in my head" (which NEVER works lol), and essentially getting nowhere. Now you've got me excited to break out good old Excel and some apps I never use!
Thank you for the excellent advice and explanations regarding Track It to Change It. I would like to change budgeting, saving, and investing. How do you recommend starting to invest?
Great question! First, ask yourself what your real goal is—are you saving for retirement, building wealth, or just getting started? Next, what actually drives that outcome? Consistently setting money aside and letting it grow over time. The best metric to track isn’t short-term stock prices but how much you’re investing each month. To improve that, start small—set up automatic contributions to a simple, diversified investment like an index fund and keep going. For retirement, Wealthfront or Betterment are great options, and if you’re just getting started, Acorns or Stash make it easy. Automating recurring contributions from your paycheck is the best way to set it and forget it.
This is so interesting and well put! I do want to grow my Instagram audience. What underlying metrics would you recommend paying attention to, beside the obvious follower growth? Would love your take! https://www.instagram.com/lisedelman/
Great question! Follower growth is a natural focus, but people engage passively now, so a better metric is reach—how many unique people actually see your content.
A powerful one to track is shares per reach—if a high percentage of viewers share your post, it means your content resonates and has viral potential.
Also, ask yourself why you want to grow. If it's for sales, partnerships, or impact, track click-throughs and actions instead. Growth is great, but it needs to serve a bigger goal.

How can I find someone to help with my business goals and/or can you recommend someone?

Amazing! I so appreciate these details. Shares per reach is not an area I've been focusing - will start doing that! Thank you!
