One of the biggest things I (Julia) think about when curating fashion content is how to make style more accessible—not just for women but for the men in their lives, too. Over the years, I’ve helped Thomas refine his wardrobe, but he’s also developed a strong sense of personal style on his own.
So, I thought it would be fun to interview him about his approach to fashion. My hope is that this conversation helps other wives (or partners) who want to guide their husbands toward dressing well—without making it feel like a chore.
Julia: If left to your own devices, what would you wear every day?
Thomas: I played a lot of golf growing up, so I feel most natural in a collared shirt—a polo for warm weather and a button-up for cooler days. For pants, I default to cotton chinos or shorts in a similar material, paired with a braided brown belt and nice sneakers. It’s an easy, put-together uniform that I don’t have to overthink.
Julia: What’s one thing guys get wrong about dressing well?
Thomas: Either being too conservative with color or avoiding patterns altogether. I used to do the same, but lately, I’ve been experimenting with tonal dressing—wearing different shades of the same color (blues, tans, neutrals) and adding texture. For example, I just ordered a bunch of pieces from OAS for Mexico because they do a great job with textured fabrics like terry, linen, and waffle knits.
Julia: If you could only own five clothing items, what would they be?
Thomas:
White or brown leather sneakers
Julia: What’s the most-worn piece in your wardrobe?
