This week was filled with small joys—an incredible new restaurant, a fun discovery that I’m hoping to make our mornings smoother, and the start of packing for our upcoming trip. With spring on the horizon, I’ve been thinking about what I want more of in the months ahead: slower evenings, fewer impulse buys, and a little more spontaneity. Here’s what’s been on my mind (and in my cart) this week.
1. The reminder that “Dreams are free.”
Whenever I catch myself saying “that’ll never happen,” a friend always responds with this simple phrase: “Dreams are free.” It’s become a little mantra that I love—because why not let yourself imagine the best possible version of things? Sometimes, just allowing yourself to dream is the first step toward making it happen.
2. A creative way to help kids with routines
Mornings and bedtime with little ones can feel like a never-ending loop of reminders, but I recently found Charmspring, and it’s such a clever way to help kids take ownership of their routines. It turns daily tasks into something visual and interactive. If you want to try it, they gave me a discount code to share: JULIA20 for 20% off.
3. A delicious dinner at Bintü Atelier
Thomas and I had dinner at Bintü Atelier, a newer African cuisine restaurant in Charleston, and it was one of those meals where we just kept ordering. The flavors were bold, layered, and unlike anything else in town. The jollof rice and suya-spiced steak were two of the biggest standouts. If you’re in Charleston or visiting soon, add this to your list. There’s no alcohol on the menu but multiple regular brought their own wine.
4. Our go-to travel books for the girls
Both of my girls love these sticker books, and they’ve become my secret weapon for travel. Before every trip, I stock up on a few new ones because they keep them entertained on the plane, during downtime in the room, or even at dinner. I usually go for activity books with reusable stickers, so they last longer (and take up zero space in my bag). If you’re traveling soon or need an activity on the way to school with little ones, these are worth adding to your carry-on.
5. Packing for Mexico: Two new finds
Our trip to Mexico is coming up, and I’ve been eyeing pieces that feel polished but still effortless to wear. I just ordered this black one-shoulder top (just over $100 and so chic), and I couldn’t resist this Johanna Ortiz dress with raffia tassels trailing off the back straps. It feels like the kind of piece you keep forever.
6. The sauce I’m putting on everything
Our fridge is never without Bitchin’ Sauce (the original almond-based dip is my go-to), but when Whole Foods was out last week, Thomas grabbed the cilantro version, and now I’m hooked. It’s herby, bold, and packed with flavor. Lately, I’ve been adding it to turkey wraps, salads, and even using it as a dip with chips or veggies—so good.
7. The trip I’ve been waiting for: Maroma, a Belmond hotel
This trip has been on mine and Thomas’s wishlist since they opened in 2023, and next week, we’re finally heading to Maroma, a Belmond hotel in Mexico. I can’t wait for some sun, great food, and a little space to unwind.
8. The perfect rooftop spot I always forget about
We had one of those perfect Charleston days—75 degrees and sunny, and I ended it with drinks at The Citrus Club, the rooftop bar at The Dewberry. Every time I go, I’m reminded what a great spot it is—unreal city views, fresh cocktails, and such a good outdoor atmosphere. If you’re planning a trip, make sure this one is on your list. Here is my daily look from that night.
9. A big home clean-out before the move
We just did a major edit of our home—sorting through things we thought we needed but barely used. It felt so good to clear things out, but also made me realize how many purchases were made in the moment, only to sit untouched. Hoping this process helps us shop more intentionally for our next space.
10. Turning the tables on Thomas—Men’s fashion edition
Tomorrow on Substack, I’m switching things up—I’ll be asking Thomas some questions about men’s fashion. If your husband or partner could use a little wardrobe refresh (or if you’re just curious about his takes), this one’s for you. It’s for paid subscribers only, along with a ton of other content we share—so if you haven’t signed up yet, now’s the time!
xx Julia
